Tour Pallay Poncho

The Pallay Poncho is a traditional Andean garment handwoven by artisans, used by communities in the Peruvian highlands, especially in the Cusco region. This tour offers a close-up look at the making of this garment, a symbol of Andean culture. The trip includes a visit to the communities of Chinchero or Pitumarca, where you will see local artisans weaving ponchos using ancestral techniques passed down through generations. You will also have the chance to participate in an interactive experience, learning about the use of pallay (the textile) in traditional clothing and its cultural significance.

Itinerary

Tour Itinerary (Full Day):

8:00 amHotel pick-up:

The tour starts with a pick-up from your hotel in Cusco around 8:00 am. Travelers will be transported in a comfortable vehicle to the community of Chinchero or Pitumarca, located about one hour or more from Cusco.

9:30 amVisit to the local community:

Upon arrival in the community, travelers will be welcomed by local artisans who will explain the ancestral process of making the ponchos. Wool from alpacas and sheep is used, and it is handwoven using traditional looms and natural dyes extracted from local plants and minerals.

10:30 amWeaving demonstration:

The artisans will provide a demonstration of the process of weaving the Pallay Poncho, showing the techniques used by their ancestors to create intricate and meaningful designs. Travelers will observe how the weaving is done on the loom and learn about the patterns and colors, which hold deep cultural significance.

12:00 pmTraditional lunch:

After the demonstration, travelers will enjoy a traditional Andean lunch, with dishes such as cuy chactado, pachamanca, or quinoa soup. This is a perfect time to relax and experience local gastronomy.

1:30 pmFree time for shopping:

Travelers will have time to explore the community and purchase ponchos, blankets, and other wool products woven by local artisans. These products are ideal as authentic souvenirs of the region and directly support the local communities.

3:00 pmReturn to Cusco:

After a day full of learning and cultural experiences, the group will return to Cusco, with an estimated arrival time around 4:30 pm.
