Waqrapucara Tour

Waqrapucara is a pre-Inca archaeological complex located in the district of Acomayo, in the southern region of Cusco. The site sits at an altitude of approximately 4,200 meters above sea level and is surrounded by breathtaking mountainous landscapes. Waqrapucara is believed to have been a ceremonial and military center of great importance to the ancient inhabitants of the region, possibly linked to the Qhapaq Ñan (Inca trail) and the expansion of the Inca Empire.

What makes Waqrapucara special is its location atop a cliff, offering panoramic views of the Acomayo valley and the surrounding mountains. Throughout the tour, travelers will explore stone structures, ancient pathways, and learn about the history and traditions of the Andean peoples.

Itinerary

Waqrapucara Tour Itinerary (Full Day):

6:00 amPick-up from the Hotel:

The tour begins with pick-up from your hotel in Cusco at around 6:00 am. Travelers will board a comfortable vehicle to start the journey to the Waqrapucara archaeological site, located about 3 hours from Cusco.

9:00 amArrival at the Base of Waqrapucara:

After the scenic journey through rural landscapes and mountains, the group will arrive at the base of Waqrapucara, where a brief introduction about the historical and cultural significance of the site will take place. The guide will explain the features of the complex and how the ancient inhabitants of the area used the structures for ceremonial and military purposes.

9:30 amStart of the Hike to Waqrapucara:

The hike to the archaeological site begins from the base. The trek takes approximately 1.5 hours of ascent. Along the way, travelers will pass through stunning mountainous terrain, enjoying spectacular views of the valley and the surrounding mountains.

11:00 amArrival at Waqrapucara:

Once at the top, travelers will explore the Waqrapucara archaeological complex. The site consists of several stone structures, platforms, and plazas. Guides will explain the significance of the structures, including temples, agricultural terraces, and the possible functions of the different buildings. It is believed that the site was used by various pre-Inca cultures and later by the Incas, making it a place of great historical relevance.

12:30 pmPicnic Lunch:

After exploring the site, travelers will enjoy a picnic lunch in the area. The meal will include typical regional dishes such as cuy chactado, roast chicken, and other Andean dishes accompanied by potatoes and corn.

2:00 pmExploration of the Surroundings of Waqrapucara:

After lunch, the group will have time to explore the surroundings of the site, which offer breathtaking views of the valley and mountains. Travelers will also learn more about the local fauna and the plants that grow in the high mountain region.

3:00 pmDescent Back to the Base:

The group will begin the descent back to the base of Waqrapucara, which takes approximately 1.5 hours. During the descent, there will be opportunities to take additional photos and enjoy panoramic views of the Acomayo valley.

4:30 pmReturn Journey to Cusco:

After the hike and exploration, the group will return to Cusco in the private vehicle. The return journey takes about 3 hours, and the estimated arrival time in Cusco is around 7:30 pm.
